The Senior Director, Employment Law will lead the employment legal function. This role will ensure that Discount Tire complies with applicable employment laws and regulations. The position will support a wide range of business clients within the organization, focusing on employment advice and litigation, employee training, and internal investigations. This role will serve as a trusted advisor to our Human Resources team and other internal clients.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the key legal advisor on all significant labor and employment law, and employee relations matters
  • Provide legal, strategic, and business advice and support on day-to-day employee relations matters and compliance, including recruiting, hiring, and compensation; employee discipline, performance management, terminations, anti-discrimination, harassment prevention, and non-retaliation; federal and state wage-hour compliance; leaves of absence and workplace accommodations; and internal investigations of potential violations of Company policy
  • Handle pre-litigation claims, settlement negotiations and mediations, and federal and state litigation, including management of outside counsel
  • Work to minimize legal exposure by proactively reviewing existing practices, forms, contracts, and policies regarding employment matters, while considering business objectives and practicalities
  • Draft policies, procedures, and agreements and prepare legal documents and other forms of communication regarding transactional or legal advice
  • Partner with HR to provide guidance on applicable employment regulations, monitor developments in employment laws and provide practical and actionable guidance to our business
  • Provide legal counsel to executives and senior/middle management on changes in the law and complex legal issues that may have a significant impact on Company operations
  • Provide support on design, interpretation and enforcement of employment law

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of relevant legal experience in employment law and/or litigation, preferable to have experience in the retail industry
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Mix of substantive law firm and in-house, hands-on labor and employment experience in a fast-paced environment with constantly changing priorities, schedules and assignments
  • Significant litigation and counseling experience on all facets of the employee-employer relationship
  • Supervisory and management skills with the ability to oversee projects delegated to in-house legal staff and outside counsel
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and effectively provide strategic, business-focused advice and counsel in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment with emerging priorities

 

Education & Licenses:

JD from an ABA accredited law school; member of at least one state bar in good standing

 

Work Days:

Normal work days are Monday through Friday. Occasional Saturdays and Sundays may be necessary.

 

Work Hours:                    

Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional overtime (more than forty hours per week) may be necessary.
