Under immediate supervision, the Tax Specialist I prepares and processes Company taxes in compliance with all sales, use and personal property tax laws and all state, county, and city business licensing requirements.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares multi-state tax returns using company tax software system
  • Communicates and assists stores with “Resale Tax Exempt” guidelines
  • Approves resale tax exempt certificates using tax software system; works with both employees and retail customers
  • Obtains state, county and city licenses required for new locations, including business licenses, alarm permits and miscellaneous operational licenses
  • Monitors business licenses and permits renewal dates and takes appropriate action to keep all licenses and permits current
  • Provides and ensures each location has current business licenses and permits to be posted
  • Troubleshoots and resolves basic business license and permit issues to include penalties, non-compliance and false alarm notifications
  • Maintains, prepares and files business personal property tax returns
  • Prepares environmental tire fee tax returns, prepayments and miscellaneous taxes
  • Stays current on the latest industry technologies, trends and strategies
  • Assists employees, vendors or other customers by answering questions related to Tax procedures and services
  • Completes work in a timely and accurate manner while providing exceptional customer service
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements


  • This position requires a minimum of one year corporate tax or GL experience; knowledge of state tax laws is highly preferred.
  • Tax experience in a retail environment preferred.
  • Experience researching, compiling, analyzing and interpreting related tax data preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office, including skills with Word and Excel required.
  • Ability to design and create intermediate or complex spreadsheets is necessary.
  • SAP experience beneficial.
  • Ability to read and interpret tax laws with guidance is necessary.
  • This position requires good verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work efficiently under pressure, accurately meet deadlines and present a professional demeanor is essential.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, multi-task, and manage multiple projects to meet various deadlines simultaneously is required.
  • Customer service skills, including the ability to manage and respond to different customer situations while maintaining a positive and friendly attitude are essential.
  • Maintaining confidentiality, treating others with respect and upholding Company values are key attributes. In addition, organizational and problem solving skills, a can-do attitude, and the ability to adjust to changing requirements are essential


Education Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED required; additional college level accounting or business related classes preferred


Work Days:

Normal work days are Monday through Friday; Occasional Saturdays and Sundays may be necessary


Work Hours:

Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Occasional overtime (more than forty hours per week) may be necessary
